Types of Camera Lenses

A Single Lens Reflex camera (commonly known as an SLR camera) is the most versatile camera on the market. Two of the biggest benefits of using an SLR camera is the ability to use different lenses whenever needed and the control you have with the lenses. Every camera lens will produce a different look. The most common types are standard, telephoto, and wide angle lenses. In addition to these lenses, there are macro, fisheye, shift perspective, and prime and fixed lenses. We’ll go over the uses for each as well as their advantages and disadvantages below.

A standard lens will capture exactly what the human eye sees. The standard focal length for this lens is 50 mm. This is great as a general-purpose lens. And the best part, it’s lightweight and compact.

A telephoto lens allows you to isolate the subject of your photo from the background. There are different types of telephoto lenses including those for taking portrait photos and ones with zoom capabilities for subjects far away. It’s best to use the zoom feature on the telephoto lens for getting shots of wild animals, dangerous subjects, or ones that you physically can’t get close to.
